English-language programs in China have been successful in attracting international students from all over the world. You don’t need to be fluent in Chinese to study for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in China.

International students can receive an education in English and explore potential opportunities in China for the future. Aspiring students should consider whether to apply for a Chinese-taught or an English-taught degree program, as well as which type of English-taught program to apply for. China offers two types of English-taught programs: the International Student Admission Only Program and the English-Taught Program with Local Students.

English Schools in China

  1. Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University, formerly known as Chekiang University, is a public research university situated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. It consistently ranks among the top five academic institutions in mainland China and is one of the oldest universities in the country. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University began accepting international students in 1979. Over 30,000 foreign students have since studied at the institution and experienced Chinese culture firsthand.

Zhejiang University offers English-taught programs such as MBBS, Dual Degree, Engineering, and Global Communication and Management programs. Students enrolling in these programs need not prove fluency in Chinese, but they may be required to submit proof of English proficiency.

Master’s students can also choose from various English-taught programs, including civil engineering, chemical engineering, intelligent manufacturing and control engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, and applied statistics. Doctoral students can pursue postgraduate programs such as Chinese law, botany, zoology, electrical engineering, food science, and others.

  1. Fudan University

Fudan University, located in Shanghai, China, is a renowned national public research university. It is a member of the prestigious C9 League, Project 985, Project 211, and the Double First Class University identified by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Originally established as Fudan Public School in 1905, it was the first higher education institution founded by a Chinese person. In 1917, it was renamed Fudan University, a name it has kept ever since.

In 2022, Fudan University is ranked 3rd in China, 7th in Asia, and 31st globally according to the QS Rankings. The university offers approximately 50 undergraduate programs to international students, including two English-taught undergraduate programs – MBBS (a six-year medical program) and UIPE (Undergraduate International Program in Economics). International students can also choose from 175 master’s and 137 Ph.D. programs, with 47 of them taught in English.

  1. Wuhan University

Wuhan University is a public research university located in Wuhan, Hubei, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Established on November 29, 1893, it is considered the oldest university in China based on its university history document. It was founded as one of the four elite universities during the early republican period of China. For decades, Wuhan University has been regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in China.

Wuhan University offers 16 undergraduate courses in English, including Media and Communication, Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Electronic Commerce, Tourism Management, Software Engineering, Property Management, Project Management, Financial Management, Accounting, Marketing, Logistics Management, Human Resources Management, Insurance Studies, Public Finance, Finance Engineering, and International Economy and Trade.

Additionally, the university offers nine English-taught master’s programs, including Media and Communication Study, Electronic Commerce, International Relationship, International Business, Software Engineering, International Relations, International Master of Business Administration, International Law (LLM), and International Law and Chinese Law.

  1. Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a public research university located in Guanshan Subdistrict, Hongshan District, Wuhan, Hubei province, China. In the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities, it ranked 96th globally, 14th in Asia, and 8th in mainland China. It also ranked 200 in other influential university rankings such as the U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Huazhong University of Science and Technology offers two undergraduate programs taught in English: Telecommunication Engineering and Machine Design Manufacturing and Automation. Additionally, it offers 45 master’s programs that are taught in English.

  1. Xi’an Jiaotong University

Xi’an Jiaotong University is a public research university located in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. It is a leading national university with special strengths in engineering, technology, applied economics, management, and life sciences. As a member of the Double First Class University Plan, C9 League, Project 985, and Project 211, it is considered one of the top universities in China. The university was established in 1896.

At the undergraduate level, Xi’an Jiaotong University offers four courses taught in English: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Business Administration, and Economics. The university also offers 14 English-taught programs at the master’s level.
