Best 5 English Schools in China

Are you looking for schools or universities to enroll in but worried because you don’t speak Chinese? Lofty Scholars has taken the time to compile a list of English schools in China.

Programs in China that use English as the main language have done well in getting students from different countries. You don’t have to be really good at speaking Chinese to study for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in China.

People from different countries can come to China to study and also think about what kind of program they want to join. There are two options for studying in English in China: one where only international students are in the class, and the other where local Chinese students also study with you.

Overview of English Schools in China

1) Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University, which used to be called Chekiang University, is a government-funded research university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. It’s always in the top five universities in China and is one of the oldest in the country. It started way back in 1897. They started having students from other countries in 1979, and more than 30,000 foreign students have come to study there and learn about Chinese culture.

Zhejiang University has programs where the classes are in English, like MBBS, Dual Degree, Engineering, and Global Communication and Management programs. If you want to join these programs, you don’t have to show that you’re good at Chinese, but you might have to prove that you can speak English well.

For master’s students, there are different programs where classes are in English, like civil engineering, chemical engineering, intelligent manufacturing and control engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, and applied statistics. Doctoral students can also do advanced studies in fields such as Chinese law, botany, zoology, electrical engineering, food science, and more.

2) Fudan University

Fudan University is a well-known public research university in Shanghai, China. It’s part of important groups like the C9 League, Project 985, Project 211, and is recognized as a Double First Class University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It started as Fudan Public School in 1905, and it was the first university started by a Chinese person. In 1917, it became Fudan University, and it’s been called that ever since.

In 2022, Fudan University is considered the 3rd best university in China, the 7th best in Asia, and the 31st best in the world according to the QS Rankings. They have about 50 different programs for students from other countries, including two programs in English: MBBS, which is a six-year medical program, and UIPE, which is about economics. International students can also pick from 175 master’s programs and 137 Ph.D. programs, and 47 of those are taught in English.

3) Wuhan University

Wuhan University is a government-funded research university in Wuhan, Hubei, China. It started on November 29, 1893, which makes it the oldest university in China based on its historical records. It was one of the top universities in China during the early days of the republic. People have thought it’s one of the most attractive campuses in China for many years.

Wuhan University has 16 bachelor’s degree programs that are taught in English. These include subjects like Media and Communication, Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Electronic Commerce, Tourism Management, Software Engineering, Property Management, Project Management, Financial Management, Accounting, Marketing, Logistics Management, Human Resources Management, Insurance Studies, Public Finance, Finance Engineering, and International Economy and Trade.

The university also has nine master’s programs that are taught in English. These include things like studying Media and Communication, Electronic Commerce, International Relations, International Business, Software Engineering, International Relations, Business Administration, Law (LLM), and International Law and Chinese Law.

4) Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a government-funded research university in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. In the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities, it was ranked as the 96th best in the world, 14th in Asia, and 8th in mainland China. It also did well in other important university rankings like the U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, where it was ranked 200th.

Huazhong University of Science and Technology has two bachelor’s programs where the classes are in English: Telecommunication Engineering and Machine Design Manufacturing and Automation. They also have 45 master’s programs that are taught in English.

5) Xi’an Jiaotong University

Xi’an Jiaotong University is a government-funded research university in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. It’s a top national university known for being really good in engineering, technology, economics, management, and life sciences. It’s part of important groups like the Double First Class University Plan, C9 League, Project 985, and Project 211, which means it’s considered one of the best universities in China. It started in 1896.

For bachelor’s degrees, Xi’an Jiaotong University has four programs where the classes are in English: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Business Administration, and Economics. They also offer 14 master’s programs that are taught in English.
